EMPOWERMENT IN COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY POVERTY, DISASTER and HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

EMPOWERMENT IN COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY POVERTY, DISASTER and HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Poverty, Natural disasters and humanitarian crisis have devastating effects on communities. The risk to human life and the destruction of community foundations that, in many cases, take generations to establish, cause unimaginable turmoil and stress on individuals and whole
communities.

In collaboration with in-country partners, Misfit Aid aims to empower these communities with resources and support that aid restoration and re-development. Impacted communities often require long-term development programs that are focused on restoring or developing the community to a place where it functions effectively, successfully services the community and meets the needs of local residents. Misfit Aid aims to come along side in-country partners to assist in the delivery of activities that support the development of communities and improve the lives of its residents.

Due to the nature of our support, practical assistance will typically occur some months following the initial and immediate response period and, once the long- term development needs are clear and evident. We have established a robust process to develop an immediate action plan following a disaster or humanitarian crisis that can be mobilized and coordinated. This action plan is a multi-pronged approach that involves working hand-in-hand with local communities; providing mentoring programs and training that equips local to implement re-development activitiesthemselves.

Misfit Aid believes that empowerment - enabling the community to continue without our assistance over the long-term - is the best way forward.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Communities impacted by a disaster or poverty often require long-term development programs that are focused on restoring or developing the community to a place where it functions effectively, successfully services the community and meets the needs of local residents. Misfit Aid aims to come along side in-country partners to assist in the delivery of activities that support the development of communities and improve the lives of its residents. We aim to work along-side locals, empowering and equipping them with skills and training in areas related to the activities we implement i.e: housing construction skills, so they can continue with activities following the departure of teams, and ultimately enabling them to continue without our assistance over the long-term.

LOCAL SUPPORT INITIATIVES

LOCAL SUPPORT INITIATIVES

Misfit Aid actively engages and collaborates with local charities and like-minded individuals and organisations to support and promote aid and development work both within Australia and overseas. Our Australian based initiatives are detailed below.

Meeting of the Minds

Meeting of the Minds is an initiative launched by Jeff Ryan (Misfit Aid), Milton Brown (Surf Aid) and Liz McDougall to gather together like minded individuals and organisations from the local community to engage, network and ultimately empower participants in the work they are doing on both a local and global scale for communities in need.

In particular, it was established to

  • Connect individuals involved with indigenous or overseas aid work
  • Empower, support and connect people and networks
  • Utilise and share existing skills and talents to support communities in need
  • Educate and inform network contacts about aid related issues and experience.

Meeting of the Minds is facilitated through quarterly meetings held in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and facilitated by Jeff Ryan.
